Orthopedic physical therapy is a specialty in physical therapy indicating a focus on the treatment of injuries/problems located in the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and nerves. Most often there may be several mechanical components contributing to your symptoms. An orthopedic focused physical therapist has extended training in recognizing and treating these issues in a comprehensive manner. The American Board of Physical Therapy – Specialists Board issues the designation of O.C.S. (Orthopedic Clinical Specialist) following rigorous assessment and examination of the therapist. We, at Pain Relief and Physical Therapy, all have a particular interest in orthopedic injuries and have several therapists with the O.C.S. designation. Our goals are to be able to work with you to abolish pain, restore motion, improve muscle strength/balance in the affected region, improve gait patterns, improve functional mobility while aiming to return you to your recreational activities and prevent reoccurrence. Back to topThe Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) ensures continual communication between the injured athlete/patient, physician, coach and family on when and how the athlete/patient can return to play or to work. As specialists in the prevention, recognition and rehabilitation of injuries, ATCs can administer immediate emergency care and use their knowledge of each athlete's or patient’s injuries and the factors influencing them to develop a treatment program based on medical, exercise and sports sciences.

• The ACL Injury Prevention Program
o Our staff consisting of athletic trainers, exercise physiologists and physical therapists have witnessed a significant number of ACL season ending injuries within our population of young female athletes. We as athletic professionals are working hard to help reduce this occurrence, and have created our ACL Injury Prevention Program. This program is geared towards reducing the risk of ACL injuries as well as enhancing an athlete’s overall sports performance.
What are the athletes saying? “The EDGE not only improved my speed and strength, it took my game to a higher level in all aspects of my performance. I would recommend the EDGE to any athlete looking to improve their performance in any sports!”
-Karen Berk, Swarthmore College *Women’s Basketball Team ’04-‘08
*Haverford College Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach“The EDGE allowed me to be confident in my defensive footwork on the lacrosse field. While working with instructors at the EDGE for 3 summers, not only did my footwork get better, but my overall play on the lacrosse field improved as a result of the tools I had learned at the EDGE.”
-Jenn Cook, University of North Carolina *Women’s Lacrosse Team ’04—‘07

*2006 National Defender of the Year from Inside LacrosseBack to topThis is the therapist's approach for the patients to get and stay in shape. This targeted program helps the inactive or under active prepare for increased physical exertion, including home exercise, by teaching the proper way to condition muscles. At the end of your program you will be able to safely continue your exercise routine at home, in the gym or outside.
General Conditioning -This is ideal for the average person. Someone who is looking to increase energy their level, feeling of well being and improve muscle tone would benefit from this program.
Sports Specific Training - Any athlete would benefit from our strength and conditioning program. It takes into consideration body energy systems, muscle fiber type and mechanics for your particular sport.
Recreational Sport Performance Enhancement - This program is designed to help prevent injuries and over use syndromes common to the “weekend warrior,” and to enhance your game.
Post Cardiac Rehabilitation - To decrease the risk of reoccurrence, after cardiac rehabilitation, we have a supervised exercise program emphasizing cardiovascular conditioning.
Post Outpatient Rehabilitation - After rehabilitating an injury, it’s nice to be able to get back in shape at a facility that understands your previous condition and can tailor a program around it.
Osteoporosis - Weight training helps to maintain bone mass. Our program is balanced to insure all areas of the body are stressed appropriately.
Weight Loss – We combine exercise with dietary guidelines to promote healthy weight loss.
Back to top Our staff has experience successfully treating professional, amateur, college, high school and recreational athletes of all ages. Back to topWork tolerance testing-We determine a person’s suitability for a specific job, which includes screening for pre-existing conditions and predisposition for certain injuries. We are not limited to any job situation. Examples of two long-standing clients: accessing job tasks performed by EMT's at Keystone Quality Transport, and heavy lifting required by the truck drivers at Penske Logistics.
